What is Gumbo exactly? They say in Louisiana, â€śit is a little bit of this and a little bit of that.â€ť Gumbo is a dish that is much like its heritage- a mix of French, German, Italian and African cooking traditions.
You begin with a dark roux that is used as a base for the stew. To that okra and filĂ© powder are added to continue the thickening. Now it gets interesting and is up to creativity of the chef. Meats, shellfish and vegetables are added to create a masterpiece. It is delicious and you will be hooked at first bite!
The 29th Annual Sandestin Gumbo Festival is just around the corner and this is one event on the Gulf Coast that you do not want to miss.Â This popular festival is one of the largest winter food events in our area. Activities begin on Friday, February 16th at 5:00 pm and continue until 4:00 pm on Saturday, February 17th.
Festivities begin will a mouth-watering seafood boil on Friday night from 5:00-7:00 pm at Hammerheadâ€™s Bar and Grill. Beginning at noon on Saturday your taste buds will be in high gear as you enjoy sampling gumbo from the areaâ€™s best chefs as they participate in a cook-off. Start tapping your feet and enjoy the live music from Dikki Du and the Zydeco Krewe as it fills the air. There will also be plenty of activities for the whole family to partake in.
