Best Place for Authentic Italian Food in Destin?
Our family grew up loving a wonderful Italian restaurant called Perri’s, located in Fort Walton Beach. There’s a Facebook memory page called “Fort Walton Beach: What We Did” which often features lengthy discussions any time there’s a mention of Perri’s. Commenters post about their favorite dishes, such as Perri’s spaghetti, veal parmesan, & fettucine alfredo.
Perri’s was especially beloved by our family since we worked at the restaurant in a variety of jobs such as waitress, sous chef, and bus boy. In the B&W photo, that’s our waitress mom on the back row, second from the right, with owners Vic & Aggie Perri, sitting in front, circa 1964. The restaurant had a huge local and vacationer following since it served delicious, authentic Italian food with affordable prices and great service.
Since the Perri’s days, we’ve judged every Italian restaurant against the wonderful food created by Mr. Perri. We now can report a new favorite! We are passing our favorite Italian restaurant crown to Mimmo’s, a great addition to the line-up of excellent restaurants in Destin, Florida.
Our recent meal involved excellent & creative Italian dishes. To start your meal, I would suggest my new favorite appetizer, gamberi alla diavola, shrimp sautĂ©ed with garlic & crushed red peppers, served in marinara sauce, ($12.95). Served on toasted bread, I could’ve enjoyed this as a main course – the crushed red pepper gave the sauce a great little kick. Also very popular, Mimmo’s famous Italian garlic rolls – six fresh, homemade rolls served with a garlic butter sauce. ($6.95). We also ordered the meatballs & Italian sausage appetizer, so delicious. Â
For our entrees, we ordered a variety. First, spaghetti bolognese, served with traditional meat sauce, slow-cooked in homemade San Marzano tomato sauce ($15.95). I would add meatballs – Mimmo’s meatballs are the real deal. Even better, add both meatballs & sausage, and take home the leftovers – it is a large serving of pasta and we love next-day spaghetti.
We also sampled the homemade tortelloni (stuffed tortelloni pasta with beef & veal, served with a light cream tomato sauce and touch of pesto, and it was a wonderful, tasty dish.
Penne with broccoli & sausage ($15.95) was our surprise favorite. The spicy cream sauce added great flavor. If you are not in a pasta mood, the pizzas, baked in the brick wood-burning pizza oven are an excellent choice.
Looking past appetizers and your main course, don’t miss the nutella pizza. It was a crowd-pleaser with kids and adults. In fact, we should have ordered more than one. It’s a thin-crust pizza with a slight chocolate flavor, topped with nutella and white chocolate chips, then lightly toasted in the pizza oven. Check the nightly specials to also see which homemade desserts are being featured for the night.
