Best Sunscreens for Summer 2018

This year, Consumer Reports tested more than 70 sunscreen lotions, sprays, sticks, and lip balms and found, that “you can’t always rely on the sun protection factor (SPF).” That number is a measure of protection from ultraviolet B radiation, which is the chief cause of sunburn and a contributor to skin cancer. CR also tested for protection against ultraviolet A rays, which tan and age skin, and also trigger skin cance

The sunscreens tested must have a listed SPF of at least 30 and be water-resistant. Here’s the most important take-home from the CR research:

  • “Of the 73 lotions, sprays, sticks, and lip balms in our ratings this year, 24 tested at less than half their labeled SPF number. That doesn’t mean the products aren’t protective at all, but you might not be getting the degree of protection you think you are.”
