Best Fish Taco Recipe
Craving fish tacos? We’ve got you covered! Fish tacos are a staple here on the Gulf Coast and can be prepared a variety of different ways. Breaded, fried, or blackened, served in a hard or soft shell. We don’t discriminate when it comes to fish tacos! If you’re looking for a healthy fish taco recipe, try this one out as the fish is grilled and features delicious veggie toppings. We might be a little biased, but this is definitely the best fish taco recipe we’ve ever tasted!
You can prepare your fish a few different ways – on a skillet over a hot stove, or on the grill at your Destin vacation rental. With summer in full swing, you’ll definitely want to look for vacation rentals in Destin with private grills so you can make the most of cooking outdoors. Pick up some delicious fish (tilapia, mahi, snapper, or halibut work perfectly!) from your local Destin seafood market. Be sure to get them fileted for faster cook time.
Ready to prepare these delicious fish tacos? Let’s get started!
For the Fish:
|1 lb lean white fish fillets
||Salt and black pepper, to taste
||1 tsp cumin
|8 white corn tortillas
||1 minced garlic clove
||1/2 tsp paprika
|2 tbsp olive oil
||1 half-tsp chili powder
||1/8 tsp cayenne pepper
The Crema Sauce:
|1/2 cup sour cream
||1/3 cup mayonnaise
||1 small lime, juiced (or 2 tbsp bottled lime juice)
|1/2 tsp garlic powder
||1/4 tsp salt
||1/2 tsp cumin
|1 tsp hot sauce
And the Toppings:
|Pico de gallo
- Lay your fish out on a plate and season both sides with salt and pepper
- Whisk together the oil, garlic, chili powder, cumin, paprika, and cayenne in a large mixing bowl.
- Add fish to a large Ziploc bag with the marinade. Allow the fish to sit for 20-30 minutes.
- Preheat your grill or skillet to medium-high heat. Make sure to apply oil to the grill grates or skillet first!
- Grill fish for 3-4 minutes on each side. Flip only once! You will know the fish is done when it begins to flake (test this with a fork).
- Cook tortillas on a dry skillet for a few seconds on each side until warmed.
- Transfer fish to a clean plate and rest for 3 minutes before shredding with a fork.
- Lastly, serve on warm tortillas and top with the pico de gallo, cabbage, red onion, avocado, and Cojita cheese. Add cilantro, lettuce, lime wedges, and hot sauce as desired. Don’t forget the crema sauce!

South Walton Turtle Watch documented their first false crawl of the season. A green turtle attempted to come on shore, but, unfortunately, was followed and/or interrupted and returned to the water without nesting.
Here’s how you can help if you are on vacation in Destin, FL:
- If you see a turtle coming to shore to nest, please stay back and give her the space she needs.
- Remain quiet and still, and never take flash photos or shine cell phone lights or flashlights on her, as that could prevent her from nesting or finding her way back to the water.
- You can help sea turtles by removing all belongings, signs, furniture, toys, garbage from the beach at night and fill in all holes so females and hatchlings have a clear and safe pathway. The holes and obstructions may trap them.
Since it’s hatching season all over Florida, specially-trained turtle nest spotters are combing the area beaches each morning, looking for signs of a new nest. By law, only certified members are allowed  to interact with endangered sea turtles. Neon orange tape helps signify a nesting site.
All species of sea turtles are protected under the Endangered Species Act. Interfering with a nesting sea turtle, nests or hatchlings is against the law. If you see someone interfering with or harassing a sea turtle, dial *FWC or #FWC from a cell phone or contact local law enforcement.Â
We are fortunate to have two volunteer organizations, the South Walton Turtle Watch and the Emerald Coast Turtle Watch, to monitor known nesting sites. Follow both on Facebook to receive updates on the turtle nesting season.

Today’s spotlight is on a Destin-based nonprofit which serves disabled veterans by teaching them how to scuba and spearfish. The mission of Task Force Poseidon is to provide disabled and wounded veterans with the equipment and instruction required for training and diving. Task Force Poseidon says the goal is to remove all obstacles and help the veterans gain the freedom only found in the water. Scuba diving & fishing – two great things to do in Destin, FL!
On Memorial Day, Task Force Poseidon recently joined forces with Emerald Coast Scuba to deploy a new 750-pound concrete monument in the Gulf of Mexico. Now located about three miles out from Destin, the four-sided monument features laser-etched plaques bearing the seals of our military forces. There are also tributes to our veterans and to those who have given their lives in service to the country. The monument will be the site of a tribute dive by Task Force Poseidon every Memorial Day.
In a Destin Log interview, army veteran and dive instructor Jason Dodd said, “We have a lot of veterans, amputees and paraplegics that we’re getting in the water and certified to dive. Scuba diving is what we do, and this is just a very special and unique way for us to go out and honor our fallen.”
What a wonderful endeavor!

With the summer season in full gear, we have some important information to help you make it a safe and wonderful experience. We want you to enjoy your time riding the emerald waves and splashing in the saltwater while on vacation in Destin, Florida.
Begin each beach trip by checking the flag color for the day. The local flag warning system is universal across all of beaches.
- Double Red Flag: Water is closed to public due to dangerous water conditions
- Red Flag: High hazard due to surf and/or strong currents
- Yellow Flag: Medium surf and/or current hazard
- Green Flag: Low hazard and calm conditions, remain vigilant
- Purple Flag: Marine pests present, such as jellyfish, stingrays or dangerous fish
Rip currents, powerful currents of water moving away from shore, are also something you should heed while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico. These currents can sweep even the strongest swimmer out to sea.
How to Survive a Rip Current:
- Don’t fight the current. It’s a natural treadmill that travels an average speed of 1-2 feet per second, but has been measured as fast as 8 feet per second—faster than an Olympic swimmer.
- Relax and float to conserve energy. Staying calm may save your life.
- Do NOT try to swim directly into to shore. Swim parallel to the shoreline until you escape the current’s pull. When free from the pull of the current, swim at an angle away from the current toward shore.
- If you feel you can’t reach shore, relax, face the shore, and call or wave for help. Remember: Wave and yell…swim parallel
For water conditions, follow our lifeguards on Facebook at Destin Beach Safety. Planning a vacation? Go here to start the vacation planning.
