Cronut Craze Comes to Destin

KaraBoo Bakery delights customers with delicious pastries and cakes including it’s own version of the cronut – a doughnut made from croissant dough.

cronutWe began our search for the Destin version when enjoying a morning cup of coffee at Camille’s Sidewalk Cafe.  We were dismayed to learn that the cafe was already sold out of its popular pastries.  I learned the source for their yummy baked goods is the KaraBoo Bakery.  After a quick Yelp search (KaraBoo, not caribou), we found the address on Emerald Coast Parkway and began our quest.

The bakery is a little hard to find.  It’s located in a strip mall, across from the outlet mall, between IHOP and Wine World.  The bakery takes it’s name from professional pastry chef Kara Enache, and her husband, Boo, who is originally from Romania.  Together, they have been running the bakery for about two years.  Boo says his day of baking usually begins about 1:00 a.m. each morning. They also supply many area restaurants in Destin, FL with specialty baked breads and pastries.  The bakery is also very popular for wedding cakes and specialty cakes.  

We sampled a sprinkle cronut and, then, returned the next day to sample a raspberry version that Boo said he would make for us.  Since our visit, he has also made the pastry into a muffin shape, calling it a “cruffin.”  Whatever the name, it’s a treat to enjoy!

cocomayaThe cronut or croissant-doughnut hybrid was invented and trademarked by Dominique Ansel Bakery in New York City.  The pastry is made by frying the layered and buttered pastry dough. The fried pastry is then sugared, filled, and glazed.  Ansel calls them cronuts, Cocomaya Bakery in London calls their version coco-doughs, while a bakery in Mountain Brook, AL calls their square-shaped variation “Sweet LaLa’s.”

In December 2013, TIME magazine named the cronut as one of the “25 Best Inventions” of 2013.  After sampling the Destin version, we tend to agree.  We invite you to head to KaraBoo Bakery to sample some of the yummy goodness!
