Destin Fun Facts
Have you ever wondered about the history of Destin?
Back in the mid-1920s B.C. (“Before Condos”) there existed five small cottages called the Island View Cottages. Operated by Mrs. A. H. Green of Pensacola, these cottages were popular among tourists. However, when the War Department declared Township 2, South, Range 22, West, their Moreno Point Military Reservation surplus in 1926, it became very difficult to sell the land we know today as Destin.
Mrs. Green eventually purchased two lots from the War Department to establish Destin’s first vacation rentals. A small home existed on Lot 8 and the property was purchased by the Greens. Along with four additional cottages and the pre-existing five cottages, the Island View Cottages became Destin’s first rental cottages. An ad in the Pensacola newspaper urged residents to “Spend Your Vacation Here!” The ad boasted attractive views of the Gulf Coast and a quaint location on the “shady shore of the Choctawhatchee Peninsula 100 yards away from the open Gulf.” By 1936 tourists could easily commute over the completed Highway 98 from Pensacola to Destin.
Now, Destin boasts a population of 13,654 according to a 2016 U.S. census. In the summertime, however, the population can easily climb upwards of 61,000! Wow! A variety of motels, hotels, and condominiums in Destin have made their way into the area for people traveling all over the world, eager to visit this slice of paradise.
