Emerald Coast to Host Emerald Warrior ’17
Growing up in this part of Florida, it’s not unusual to gaze up into the sky and witness military aircraft conducting practice missions as the Emerald Coast is home to several military bases. The area is not only a great place to vacation in Destin, Fl, the water-land terrain is perfect for combat training. If you are visiting anytime between Feb. 27 and March 11, you might see an extra influx as the Air Force Special Operations Command will be conducting Emerald Warrior, a joint military exercise.Â
According to the AFSOC, about 1,500 participants, including troops from at least three partner nations, will take part in advanced tactical scenarios, allowing opportunities to train with a wide array of military forces.
The operations will include inserting and removing troops from combat situations, direct assaults, military free fall, live-fire events and aircraft re-fueling. Army, Air Force, and Marines will be participating.
Residents may notice more aircraft overhead than usual during the two-week exercise, and might hear live munitions fire coming from Eglin Air Force Base’s test ranges. Last year, the exercise involved the use of Seahawk and Apache helicopters, AC-130s, a KC-130, F-16s, T-45s and an unmanned MQ-9 Reaper.
