Fisherman Enjoy Close Encounter with Orca Pod
Jason Parkhurst says his latest fishing expedition included a memory of a lifetime. Â
This week’s adventure included the first time experience of viewing orca whales in the wild. Luckily, Jason had his camera ready when the pod, including at least one younger orca, began swimming alongside their fishing boat.
Jason says the boat traveled to the Maersk Developer oil platform, 110 miles south/southwest of Destin, catching some nice yellowfin and blackfin tuna. He was driving the boat, with his camera ready, hoping to catch some flying fish in action.  That’s when he first spotted the blow hole of the first orca.  The orcas traveled with the boat, the Instigator, for about ten minutes before going on their way.
Just a few days before, Jason was on the sidelines at the Alabama-Ole Miss game, working as a professional freelance photographer.  One of the photos from the game, a photo of Ole Miss players jumping in celebration, is part of this week’s Sports Illustrated cover.  Nothing like being in the right place at the right time!
He says the cruising along with the orcas was definitely a photo highlight – it’s a fish tale the fisherman will not soon forget.
