Thousands gather by big boat, little boat, paddle board, kayak, jet ski, you name it, it is there for the biggest conglomeration of people playing and having a good time on the water. Activities are plenty on Crab Island. Set anchor and listen to the band playing on the floating stage, eat boiled peanuts, watch your kids slide on the big inflatable slides, snorkel, throw the football, or play whiffle baseball.

imageThis Memorial Day weekend, there¬†are¬†record numbers. Locals and visitors alike are all gathering to engage in one of the biggest parties on Earth. Music is playing and once you get there, you best settle in¬†because if you are lucky enough to find a good spot then you best hold on to it. It’s a day adventure and many stay until sunset as it is¬†THE best place to watch¬†the¬†Destin Sunset because it is located¬†with a perfect view of the West.¬†

Crab Island is located on the north side of the Destin Bridge at the entrance of the Choctawhatchee Bay. Due to the distance from shore and the strong currents and boat traffic that surround it, It is only accessible by boat. You could get a really good workout though by paddling a kayak or standup paddle board.

imageAt one time Crab Island was actually an island of sandy beach above the water, but now Crab Island is a large sand bar that is as shallow as 2 feet in some places. Most areas are about waist deep on adults. At high tide the water is almost crystal clear. This sandbar is perfect to set anchor and enjoy the water and absorb the beautiful Florida sunshine.

¬†One of the biggest questions is whether Crab Island is “Family Friendly”. Well, it can get pretty crazy around the stage or wherever the entertainment is. But there are plenty of places to anchor away from the drinking and partying crowd. And the sandbar is the perfect water playground for kids to play, swim and snorkel.

You can go to Crab Island anytime you like. Rent a boat or take your own during the week if you want to get away from the crowd for a relaxing hassle free time, or you can go on any weekend from Memorial Day to Labor Day to anchor into the biggest party unique to beautiful Destin, Florida. Two totally different experiences, so you decide what you are in the mood for and Crab Island is always there and available for more fun!image
