Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation Concerts in the Village Music Showcase Honors Armed Forces with “Military Night”
Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF) continues its 20th anniversary season of its Concerts in the Village summer series at the Cultural Arts Village in Destin, Florida, by celebrating Military Appreciation Night on Thursday, May 28.Â
On Thursday, May 28 MKAF will present The Mulligans â the Emerald Coastâs most popular band performing favorite dance tunes from the â60s and â70s. The gate opens at 6 p.m. and the concert begins at 7 p.m. Voted as one of the most fun things to do in Destin, FL, arriving early and setting up your table or spot with your picnic items and beverage of choice is a huge part of the fun and social aspect of every concert.
To honor local men and men in uniform MKAF is extending a special discounted admission of 50 percent off. For those in the armed services with valid military ID admission to the concert is just $5. Â
The come-as-you-are music showcase staged in the heart of the Destinâs Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village has become a popular summertime tradition for Northwest Florida locals and visitors.
The 20th Annual Concerts in the Village are in our Events Calendar and continues through July 2 featuring:
- May 14, DĂ©jĂ Vu (rhythm and blues)
- May 21, Shades of Blue (jazzy blues); (Military Aprpeciation Night)
- May 28, The Mulligans (â60s and â70s dance music)
- June 4, Pieces of Eight (brassy soul meets beachy R&B)
- June 11, The Maxx (a blend of oldies with pop tunes)
- June 18, Mr. Big & the Rhythm Sisters (Motown and jazz)
- June 25, Tyn Tymes (the Southern dance band)
- And as has been tradition for many years, singer/entertainer David Seering returns to close out the summer concert series on July 2 with an evening of music celebrating some of Americanâs famous artists and composers to patriotic songs.Â
âWe salute all the armed services who defend and protect our freedom and our organization wanted to show our appreciation,â said Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation CEO Marcia Hull, âWe hope local military families will come to our special concert to sit back, relax and enjoy a some quality family time.â
Bring a chair, blanket and picnic or purchase dinner onsite featuring various local restaurants or food trucks serving up delicious dinner menu options. Bring your own beverages or purchase water, soft drinks, beer and wine at the event.
Â Twenty years ago the Mattie Kelly Arts Foundation (MKAF) began an earnest mission to bring art programs, cultural events, art education and lively entertainment to the sleepy beach town of Destin, Florida. Fast forward from 1995 to 2015, and the milestone 20th anniversary of the organization founded on the cultural, educational and spiritual beliefs of Destin matriarch, Mattie Kelly. The anniversary year provides an opportunity to recognize and celebrate the contributions of the organization, while presenting vision for the future.
In recognition of the 20th anniversary, MKAF will introduce a new event: Bluegrass at the Beach, presented by ResortQuest by Wyndham Vacations.Â Friday,Â Sept. 11 is an invitation only concert event andÂ Saturday,Â Sept. 12, is aÂ full-day Bluegrass music concert in the Mattie Kelly Cultural Arts Village,Â featuring the award-winning and chart-topping band, Blue Highway.
Other signature events will include the 20th Annual Concerts in the Village, 7th Annual Labor Day Weekend Concert (Sept. 6) featuring the soul stirring sounds of the Heather Hayes Experience. Daughter of music legend Isaac Hayes, Heather Hayes, and herÂ 11-piece Atlanta-basedÂ band have a diverse R&B sound, mixing in soul and funk; the 20th Annual Festival of the Arts (Oct. 24-25) and the 20th Annual Sound of the Season (Dec. 4).
Admission to each of the spring/summer Concerts in the Village is $10 per person; children under 12 and MKAF members are free. Proceeds benefit MKAF’s cultural and education mission.
