Scale New Heights at Destin’s First Rock Climbing Gym
Husband and wife climbers Ken and Sam Sheyka have opened a rock climbing gym in Destin. Rock Out Climbing Gym offers 3,315 square feet of “top quality bouldering terrain” for a challenge previously unavailable on the Emerald Coast. The pair spent years driving back and forth to other climbing facilities. After countless day trips and hours in the car, they decided to conquer their biggest uphill battle: the absence of a climbing gym in Destin. Thus, they laid the groundwork for Rock Out.
Having hosted its “bould” opening June 10, the gym is now open to the public. Located on Palms Boulevard,  Rock Out welcomes climbers of all ages. In fact, their website boasts, “if you can walk, you can climb!” Kids under 13 need adult supervision, so the experts at Rock Out offer a training session for all adults who plan to supervise.
Of course, adults, you’ll want to get in on the fun too. This isn’t just a kids’ activity. Rock Out’s walls are 16 feet tall, with 12 inches of padding beneath. If you fall, there’s a way to do that. The experts even teach you how to fall and downward climb. Acrophobes, fear not, Rock Out Climbing Gym offers challenging routes without climbing to nerve-wracking heights.
Climbing has taken the spotlight in recent years, especially with the success of shows like Ninja Warrior. Isaac Caldiero, Ninja Warrior Champion, is a successful climber who attributes his success in great part to his rock climbing background. And when Caldiero won Ninja Warrior, what did he say he wanted to do? “I just want to go rock climbing. I want to go to all the amazing places I’ve never been.”
If you’ve never been to a climbing gym, it’s time to check it off your list. Adult day passes are $16, and kids’ day passes are $10. Punch cards are available, and the prices include your climbing orientation, fall class, rental shoes, and chalk bag.
