Where to Feast on Fat Tuesday in Destin

It's a Fat Tuesday Feast during Destin Mardi Gras

For hundreds of years, on the Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, indulgence was the name of the game. People would polish off all forbidden foods in their homes before 40 days of fasting for Lent. In France, the tradition became known as Mardi Gras, literally “Fat Tuesday,” and took root worldwide.  In the states, the French influence in Louisiana gave rise to one of the most highly anticipated events of the year, and along the Gulf Coast, we celebrate right along with our friends over in the Big Easy.  So where can you feast on Fat Tuesday in Destin and feel as if you are in the heart of New Orleans?  Find out below!

Beignets

No trip to New Orleans could be complete, or even begin, without beignets from the world-famous Café Du Monde. In Destin, start your Fat Tuesday off right with deep-fried goodness. Head to Another Broken Egg Café or, if you’re in a rush, swing through Panini Pete’s drive-through, exclusively serving beignets. It’s powdered sugar heaven.

Gumbo

With a motto like “Eat more gumbo,” you know 790 On The Gulf serves some serious Louisiana flavor.  You got your crawfish and shrimp gumbo, your duck and andouille gumbo, your chicken and sausage gumbo.  If they all sound too good to pass up, settle on the Louisiana gumbo sampler.

But hold on, now, that’s just the appetizer. Sink your teeth into a Crescent City muffaletta or shrimp po’ boy for the main course—two staples of New Orleans cuisine. And finally, save room for South Louisiana bread pudding: French bread wrapped around peaches and apples, drizzled in butter-whiskey sauce.

Red Beans and Rice

Starting at 5, HarborWalk Village is serving free red beans and rice—the perfect way to finish Fat Tuesday. So grab some hot sauce, catch some beads, and let the good times roll during Mardi Gras in Destin!
