World’s Largest Flag Dedicated to Military & First Responders
Internationally famous artist Wyland was in Destin for the official dedication of the world’s largest painted American flag mural. It’s an impressive 3.8 acres in size, located on the roof of Legendary Marina at the foot of the Destin Mid-Bay Bridge.
The mural honors the United States military who defend our country and all first responders who watch over and protect our communities. The dedication event included the presentation of colors by Eglin Air Force Base’s Honor Guard; a military aerial demonstration; the national anthem sung by Sr. Airman 1st Class Christine David, one of 37 airmen selected to sing on the Tops in Blue global tour; invocation by Okaloosa County Sheriff’s Office lead chaplain Larry Carter; “God Bless America” sung by The Voice finalist Geoff McBride; and a closing prayer to honor the military and first responders by Destiny Worship Center pastor, Steve Vaggalis.
In addition to Wyland, keynote speakers included Lt. Col. Christine Mau, the first female F-35 Air Force fighter pilot, and Bobby Dove, the military’s most wounded veteran to survive and now active with the Special Ops Wounded Warriors Foundation.
Guests were able to watch Wyland paint finishing touches via live stream on a large jumbotron at ground level. Â The project is sponsored by Legendary Marine and Sherwin-Williams.
This monumental work of art is especially inspirational because of the major military presence in Northwest Florida. Eglin Air Force Base, one of the largest bases in the world, is located just across the Choctawhatchee Bay. Fort Walton Beach is also home to Hurlburt Air Force Base. In addition, military bases are located in neighboring cities of Pensacola and Panama City.
The flag mural will be visible by military, commercial, and private pilots as they fly over Destin, Fl. Wyland and the Wyland Foundation, a non-profit public charity, are in the process of applying to the Guinness World Book of Records for the world’s largest mural of a flag distinction.
