Top Tips for Your Destin Vacation

As you probably already know, this is a very popular time to go on vacation to Destin, Florida. It’s a driveable beach vacation for many people who are ready to escape quarantine. Crowded beaches also mean crowded grocery stores and crowded restaurants. If you don’t want to spend all your time waiting in line, here are some tips to help you get your vacation off to a great start:

  1. Pack a vacation prep kit.  If you have ever been to Destin grocery stores on a summer weekend, you know those stores are jam-packed. Our advice is to pack a vacation prep kit. Leading up to your vacation, set aside a large beach tote or basket and start filling with basic necessities. Some examples of things to bring from home: laundry soap, toilet paper, garbage bags, bath soap, napkins, paper plates, salt & pepper, cooking spices, reusable storage containers, chip clips, coffee, tea, sugar, & coffee filters. Some of these items are provided by rental companies, but if you are staying for one week and/or traveling with a larger group, extras are always needed.
  2. Keep a master list so you don’t forget anything from home. Thankfully, there are now apps that can help you with packing list reminders. You can also go old-school and create a reusable list which reminds you to pack the sunglasses, beach towels, sunscreen, chargers, etc. Pack a sharpie and sticky notes for leaving notes during the week.
  3. Plan breakfast & lunch for the first few days. Freeze lunch meat, cheese, and milk, then, throw all in a cooler just before you leave home. Add some boxes of cereal, bread, and snacks and you can get through the first few days without facing the long grocery store lines.
  4. Order your groceries. It’s well worth it to subscribe to Shipt, an app-based service grocery delivery service. Through the Shipt app, members create grocery lists, choose a delivery window, and pay for the order via credit card. A Shipt delivery person then picks up the order at your selected grocery store and delivers the groceries to the address submitted. If you are a subscriber in your hometown, you can switch your location to your vacation address. For a detailed map of the coverage area visit shipt.com/gulf-coast. Shipt can also deliver from the ABC Fine Wines & Spirit store in Florida. Be flexible on your delivery times. Shoppers are especially busy during these times.
  5. Use local concierge services. Two local companies, Be My Shopper and Beach Butlers, offer an even more personalized service. Shoppers will shop your grocery list and deliver to your rental unit, even putting away the groceries. It’s all there waiting for you on your arrival!
  6. Make dinner reservations. Schedule dinner either early or late. If you can avoid the 6:00-8:00 p.m. main dinner hour, this can help shorten your restaurant wait times. Several Destin restaurants are now accepting reservations through the OpenTable app.

Moon Crush Music Festival to Return This Fall as Harvest Moon

Outdoor…safe…star-studded…successful. Those four words best describe the debut of Moon Crush, the first ever music festival held at Miramar Beach, April 26-May 1, 2021. The event was so successful that plans are in the works for a follow-up festival this fall. The dates for Harvest Moon are October 20-23, 2021.

Moon Crush organizers described the music fest as a “safely connected music vacation.” Designed by Topeka in partnership with Sixthman, it was held at Seascape Resort in Miramar Beach, Headliners included Jason Isbell and The 400 Unit, Grace Potter, Sheryl Crow, St. Paul & the Broken Bones, The Revivalists, NeedtoBreathe, and Brook & the Bluff. What a line-up!

The “first-in kind travel and music experience” was put together with safety in mind. Attendees rented one of over 300 beachfront and beachside homes and condos a short distance from where the musical performances took place. Personal viewing areas were provided to each group with contactless food and beverage service delivery available. Individual tickets (those not purchased as a condo/festival pass combo) were only available to local residents.

Event goers had to show proof of a recent negative COVID-19 test in order to check-in. Plus, masks were required at all times when attendees were not in their private, pod-specific viewing areas.

The event received national attention with a write-up in Forbes by Steve Baltin, Arts Contributor:  “Created for a COVID world, the uniquely designed event offered socially distanced coves for each party to watch the show a safe distance from each other, as well as the opportunity to pre-purchase and stock coolers that would be waiting for patrons when they arrived at their cove.

Obviously putting a show on in these times requires creativity and some different spins. But, for the performers being back in front of an audience was a much needed return to their normalcy.

“I’ve been performing for a long time, so being on the road and playing with my band is ingrained, familiar. But coming together after this painful separation really feels like a renewal,” Crow says. “To exchange that joy with the audience, to feel the energy of hope in everyone – I have tremendous gratitude for it. Of course there are anxieties that come with traveling, and with work ongoing to ensure safety at gigs, it means things will remain different for fans, venues, and performers for a while yet. But that’s okay, because we are fighting this together, and small things like a concert can help remind us why it’s important to keep doing that until the fight is done.”

Snapper Season is Coming Up!

Have You Ever Been Snapper Fishing in Destin?

If you have ever visited Destin during the summer then you have probably heard people talking about or seen pictures of red snapper. Snapper season is one of the local’s favorite fishing seasons because red snapper is not only fun to catch but also makes for good eating! We have answered some of the top-rated questions when it comes to snapper season in Destin below.snapper fishing in Destin

When Does Snapper Season Start?

Because red snapper is such a popular fish in the area, the season is quite short to ensure it is not over-fished. The season starts on June 4th and runs through July 28th. There is talk of it opening up again in the fall depending on how the summer season goes.

This also means that when you go fishing, there will be limitations to how many red snapper you can keep. They must be 16 inches in length in order to keep them. You are also only allowed to keep two per person per day. These regulations are put in place so our waters can remain full of red snapper and we can continue to protect one of our favorite fish!

Where Can I Find a Fishing Charter in Destin?

There are so many fishing charters in Destin, but we have listed our favorites below. Each fishing charter offers a different experience, but they are all a guaranteed good time. Make sure to take pictures with your haul at the end of the day!

What is the Best Red Snapper Recipe?

One of the reasons red snapper is so popular is because it is so versatile. You can grill it, bake it, or fry it and it will be delicious no matter what! Below you will find three delicious recipes that would be wonderful if you substitute the fish listed with red snapper.
